Amid a row over RC Deportivo refusing to allocate tickets to Real Zaragoza for their visit to Riazor, the Galicians have suffered a major setback to their promotion push.

The club said in a statement that winger David Mella, 20, will undergo surgery on Wednesday on the lateral collateral ligament of his left knee, ending his season.

Mella was injured against Granada, then travelled to Madrid to be assessed by renowned orthopaedic surgeon Manuel Leyes, who, in agreement with the club’s medical staff, determined that an operation was necessary.

The procedure is scheduled at Centro Médico Olympia in Madrid. After being discharged, he will return to A Coruña to begin his recovery.

In his second LaLiga Hypermotion season, the academy product has five goals, 25 appearances, 17 of them starts, and more than 1,500 minutes.

Deportivo are second on 52 points, level with Almería and one ahead of Málaga, while Racing de Santander lead the table on 59.
