Real Madrid had been relatively tranquil by comparison over the officiating over the opening weeks of the season, but Dean Huijsen’s red card against Real Sociedad has sparked Los Blancos into life. The last couple of years have seen Real Madrid make a number of complaints over the officiating in Spain, and last year they wrote an open letter calling on any referee with a connection to the Negreira era to be dismissed, as the corruption case against the former Vice-President of the Referees Committee (CTA) rumbles on.
On Saturday, Real Madrid were livid after Huijsen was dismissed for a last-man challenge, despite Eder Militao seemingly being a covering position. Manager Xabi Alonso commented that he was unconvinced by the referee’s explanation.
It was revealed by RMTV that Los Blancos were compiling a dossier of decisions to send to FIFA in order to persuade them to intervene, alleging either gross negligency, or an agenda against the club. Cadena Cope reveals that the dossier will include decisions compiled over the last 20 years, and the names of referees which they feel have been disadvantaged by over that period. They will also detail a comparisons between themselves and Barcelona in terms of cards, penalties and fouls and loss of points.

Diario AS say that Real Madrid have a balance of sending offs of +65 according to their calculations, and Barcelona’s is -2, and that video evidence will be included. That includes footage of Huijsen’s sending off compared with an incident in which Inigo Martinez was not sent off during a Celta Vigo-Barcelona clash last season. It is not clear whether they will include comparisons with other teams.
It is not yet clear how they expect FIFA to proceed with their allegations. This summer the RFEF replaced CTA President Luis Medina Cantalejo with relative unknown Francisco Soto Balirac, after inviting Real Madrid to be part of the reform process in officiating. The CTA have made changes such as delaying the announcement of referees for games to prevent them being pressured, publicly admitting errors and explaining controversial decisions, and changing the performance evaluation of officials.
A further report has revealed that while the CTA believe the decision to send Huijsen off was correct, it did not constitute a ‘clear and manifest’ error, hence VAR referee Jorge Figueroa was justified in not intervening. That is according to Cadena SER, who expected the decision to be analysed this week.
