Ruben Dias has signed a new four-year contract to commit his future to Manchester City.
The defender has been a key part of our recent success, and this new agreement keeps him at the Club until the summer of 2029.
He joined City in September 2020 from his boyhood club Benfica and has gone onto become a rock in the centre of our defence.
Dias has made more than 200 appearances for City and won nine trophies during his five seasons at the Etihad Stadium, including four Premier League titles and a Champions League, collecting a host of individual awards along the way.
“I am incredibly happy today,” the 28-year-old said.
“I’m so proud to represent this great Club. City are where I want to be – at the top of the sport, competing for trophies. The club’s ambition aligns perfectly with mine and as a footballer there is nothing better than that.
“I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. Their support from day one has been absolutely unbelievable, and I appreciate them a lot.
“When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.
“My job now is to be the best I can be for the duration of this contract, so that I can play my part in helping us challenge for more silverware.
“I want to thank my teammates, Pep, Hugo, the coaching staff and everyone at the Club. This is such a special place, and I am grateful every single day for the support I receive.
“Now the hard work begins, and I want to promise the fans that I will give everything to win more trophies and bring more success to City.”
Director of Football Hugo Viana added: "As a club, we're really excited that Ruben has signed a new contract and committed his long-term future to the Club.
“His hard work, professionalism and sheer dedication are clear to all of us every single day, He is a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch. He is one of our captains, the players listen to him and Pep and the coaching staff love working with him. He is the ultimate professional.
“His performances over the past five years have been outstanding and he is a big reason why we have been so successful. Every time Ruben pulls on a City shirt, he gives his all for the badge and we are so happy to know he will be here for the next four years.”
Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Ruben on his new contract and wish him continued success during his time here.
The impact that Ruben Dias has made since he moved to the Etihad in September 2020 has been remarkable.
He arrived when football was still be playing behind closed doors during the Covid-19 pandemic and helped turned City back into champions.
In fact, he would only know what it would like to be a Premier League winner for his first four years at the Club and as we begin our journey to reclaim the crown, his mentality and experience is exactly what’s needed in the dressing room.
Dias made his City debut in a 1-1 draw at Leeds, a week after a 5-2 defeat to Leicester in our first Premier League home game of the 2020/21 season.
He was named City’s Player of the Month in November at the start of 28-game unbeaten run on the way to the title, a League Cup and a place in the Champions League final in his native Portugal.
By the end of the campaign, the defender had been crowned Premier League Player of the Season, the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and City’s Player of the Year.
He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year, something he would achieve again in the 2022/23 season.
But for all the individual awards that Dias has collected, it is as a team member where he is vital, prepared to put his body on the line in order to help his side to chase victory and driving his team-mates forward into every battle.
The Portuguese international has never given less than 100% in his 223 appearances for the Club, and it’s exactly that commitment and desire which is why he has been tied down to a new long-term deal.
Winning four Premier League titles in a row had never been an achieved by an English men’s side before Pep Guardiola’s team claimed the record with success built on the likes of Dias’ grit and determination.
Of course, the Treble-winning side will go down in history forever and the centre-back made a huge contribution in that campaign, starting those huge Premier League games home and away to closest rivals Arsenal rivals as well as the FA Cup triumph over Manchester United.
And he played in every minute of the knockout stages on our way to Champions League success as we remained unbeaten on our way past RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid and then that epic night against Inter.
Goals don’t come along too often, although he can count himself unlucky that his 20-yard strike against Aston Villa in December 2021 was overshadowed by Bernardo Silva’s stunning volley to round off a sumptuous team move.
But Dias’ main assets are defending and leadership and that’s where he truly excels and why City fans will be overjoyed that he will be with us for another four years.
