Guadalajara will play the second of three consecutive road matches this Saturday when they visit Toluca for Matchday 8 of the Clausura 2026. The clash promises to be a high-level showdown, not only because of the strong form both clubs are enjoying, but also due to the rich history between them. Chivas will also be aiming for a win to get back on track and secure the overall top spot for at least another week.
The Rebaño and the Diablos have built an intense rivalry that has produced plenty of noteworthy stats and unforgettable moments. Here are some of the most interesting facts surrounding this matchup:
1. The first meeting in the short-tournament era took place on Matchday 16 of Invierno 1996, when Chivas defeated Toluca 2-1 with goals from Sergio 'Gusano' Nápoles and Héctor Hernández.
2. Throughout the short-tournament era, they have faced off 78 times, and only 9 of those matches ended scoreless.
3. The largest margin of victory in this rivalry is 4-0—a scoreline that has occurred for both sides.
4. This will be the fifth time the two teams meet on Matchday 8.
5. They have met four times in the Quarterfinals; the most recent was in Clausura 2024, when Chivas advanced with a 1-0 aggregate score.
6. They have clashed four times in the Semifinals—three in Liga and one in Copa. The most recent came in Clausura 2017, a tournament that Guadalajara ultimately won.
7. The only Gran Final between the two sides took place in Apertura 2006, when the Rebaño captured its eleventh league title.
8. Interestingly, no player on Chivas’ current roster has ever worn the scarlet jersey.
9. Some players who have represented both clubs over the years include Isaac Brizuela, Antonio Briseño, Alexis Vega, Pavel Pérez, Jesús Angulo, Carlos Cisneros, Aarón Galindo, Miguel Ponce, and Néstor Calderón.
10. Alfredo Talavera won titles with both institutions: with the Diablos in Bicentenario 2010, and with the Rebaño as the third goalkeeper on the squad that—coincidentally—defeated Toluca in the Apertura 2006 Final.
