Didier Deschamps calls up Lucas Chevalier, now France number 3 | OneFootball

Didier Deschamps has defended calling up Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, a club back-up, describing it as a move to lend him a hand.

Chevalier is among 26 named for next week’s camp in the United States, which includes games against Brazil on 26 March and Colombia on 29 March. According to L'Équipe, Deschamps noted the former Lille keeper has had no recent club minutes but has been part of the France set-up for over a year.

He accepted the situation is not ideal, said he had spoken with Chevalier, and stressed the keeper has not lost his value over the past four months and remains active. He added he has often extended similar support to outfield players who are substitutes at their clubs.

Deschamps underlined that Chevalier joins this camp as France’s number 3.

On his World Cup prospects, Deschamps would not look ahead, saying any reflection would follow this camp, that he is not putting pressure on Luis Enrique, and that they will see how things evolve.
