In an interview with L’Équipe, France boss Didier Deschamps was quizzed over whether Kylian Mbappé (25) would be included in his squad for the March international break. A fractious relationship has developed between the pair in recent months and that had raised speculation over if the France captain would be involved.
Mbappé was absent from two of Deschamps’ Les Bleus squads last year as he wanted to ‘prioritise’ finding form with his new club Real Madrid. This didn’t go down well with the French press as the 25-year-old forward was pictured partying in Sweden whilst France were in international action.
Romain Molina reported that the Real Madrid forward had even considered retiring from international football after the debacle that saw him become public enemy number for not wanting to represent his country. Mbappé later denied these claims saying he wanted to be in the France squad.
Asked about whether his captain will feature in his latest squad, Deschamps said, “Of course he will be there. Why wouldn’t he be there?” He was then questioned about the former PSG forward being excluded from his last two squads, to which he responded: “Yes, for very specific reasons. But he will be there, if nothing happens to him between now and then. He is very attached to the French team, even if he has had a complicated personal period. He has found all his means and, inevitably, it shows in his game, and in his head too.”
