At a hearing on Tuesday into Diego Maradona’s death, his daughter Jana accused Dr Leopoldo Luque of misleading the family into choosing home convalescence, a period that proved fatal.

According to L'Équipe, Jana Maradona, 30, who was acknowledged by her father in 2014, gave evidence at the trial. Seven healthcare professionals, including a doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and nurses, have been on trial for a month in San Isidro for potential negligence alleged to have contributed to the football icon’s death. They face up to 25 years in prison.

She recounted a family meeting in early November 2020 with doctors, where the decision was taken for Maradona to recover at home after surgery for a head haematoma.

Jana said the clinic director considered continued treatment in a rehabilitation facility to be the best course, but Luque, described as the doctor closest to Maradona in his final years, argued that option was unrealistic because her father would not accept it and the clinic would seek publicity.

She alleged that Luque assured the family home care would provide 24-hour attention, a guarantee she maintains was false.
