Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has informed two members of the club’s defensive ranks that they do not feature in his plans for next season.
The Rojiblancos pair in question? Clément Lenglet, and José María Giménez.
In the case of the former, Lenglet has already gone as far as to find for himself a new club. As per a report from journalist Matteo Moretto, the Frenchman has agreed on the terms of a three-year contract with Portuguese heavyweights Benfica.
Lenglet is expected to be allowed to depart Spain’s capital on a free transfer, through a contract termination.
And the defensive clearout at the Metropolitano will not end there…
Matteo Moretto’s report on the ongoing developments behind the scenes at Atlético Madrid adds:
‘Simeone had been clear with Lenglet by telling him that he did not factor into the future plans of the rojiblanco team and that he would have to seek a solution.
‘He did the same with José María Giménez.’
Giménez, too, will therefore now be left with the task of sourcing a new employer for next season.
