According to O Jogo, FC Porto have received no approaches for goalkeeper Diogo Costa despite him shining as Portugal’s standout at the World Cup, and the intention of Francesco Farioli and the club is to keep their captain.
Farioli is convinced Costa will continue as captain, saying he has spoken with the keeper, who was focused on the national team, and will now rest before returning to help next season.
Costa arrived in Lisbon on Wednesday morning from the United States and is on a break. He has been instructed to report back to Olival well after the training camp in England from 13 to 18 this month.
No exact return date has been set, though it is expected to be closer to the squad presentation on 25 July. This delay is likely to cost him a place in the Supertaça against Torreense.
His World Cup displays have increased his value and strengthened Porto’s negotiating hand should interest emerge. Costa is content at Porto, where he is captain, an idol to supporters and the club’s highest-paid player.
Any exit would have to be to a major European club offering a fight for domestic and international titles. If there are no developments, the presentation will also show whether he accepts André Villas-Boas’s invitation to swap 99 for 2 in honour of Jorge Costa.
