Marmoush had another chance five minutes later, but his shot deflected wide for a corner as the 27-year-old continued to cause his opponent’s issues.

Seconds after Belgium went on the attack. Substitute Romelu Lukaku stretched for a cross into the box by Thomas Meunier and forced an own goal from Egypt’s Mohamed Hany on 66 minutes.

The game continued to open up for the final 20 minutes plus stoppage time with both teams carving out enticing chances to steal the important three points.

But neither was able to find a second as the full-time whistle blew for a 1-1 draw.

Belgium now turn their attention to their clash with Iran. Their game will kick-off at 20:00 (UK) on Sunday 21 June.

Egypt will play slightly later, at 02:00 (UK), on Monday 22 June, when they face New Zealand.
