Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his England return in Friday night’s friendly against Uruguay at Wembley, and will now leave the camp with seven others before Tuesday’s meeting with Japan. England said in a Saturday night squad update that he is among eight players due to depart.
Calvert-Lewin, 29, earned a recall after standout club form and was named in Thomas Tuchel’s squad. Tuchel rested several regulars including captain Harry Kane, with Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke starting as Calvert-Lewin began on the bench.
Introduced for Solanke shortly after the break against Marcelo Bielsa’s side, he linked play well but headed a presentable chance wide from close range. He then attacked a corner that travelled through for Ben White to finish at the back post. The game ended 1-1.
The update confirmed that Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Calvert-Lewin are among those leaving. John Stones will return to Manchester City for assessment after a training issue sustained before the draw with Uruguay.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke have gone back to their clubs with knocks from the match. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka will also return to Arsenal for medical assessment, having arrived on Friday.
A revised 27-man England group will prepare for Japan at Wembley on Tuesday.
