Mainz defender Dominik Kohr, considered the Bundesliga’s most ill-disciplined player, visits Strasbourg on Thursday at 21:00 in the Conference League quarter-finals.
L'Équipe reports that the 32-year-old has collected more than 100 yellow cards and nine dismissals since 2012-13. He set the mark five months ago at Hoffenheim, surpassing Jens Nowotny and Luiz Gustavo on eight.
Last weekend at Hoffenheim, in a 2-1 defeat, he was cautioned after seven minutes for an unsporting act, then withdrawn eight minutes before the break by coach Urs Fischer to avoid another dismissal.
That previous red, also at Hoffenheim, came in a fractious finish when he planted his foot on Max Moerstedt’s calf without holding back.
Hoffenheim boss Christian Ilzer called it a clear red, saying his player bore the marks and he had not seen such a violent foul for ages. Former referee Manuel Gräfe said Kohr is known for kicking shins and that a black card would sometimes be more fitting.
A Trier-born defender who has played for Bayer Leverkusen, Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, Kohr admits he sometimes misjudges the severity of his tackles, only realising on television replays, which even frighten him. He says defending without concession is part of his make-up, but he does not enter duels intending to injure.
In the Conference League he has been calmer, booked once in seven outings after missing the opening league-phase game through injury.
