While Chelsea are preparing to take on Benfica at the Club World Cup, the directors of football have been working hard behind the scenes, and have completed a transfer deal in the background.

Fabrizio Romano has just announced his famous “here we go” on the deal to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. The winger’s medical will take place tonight, likely in the United States where both Chelsea and Dortmund are still involved in the CWC.

A 7 year contract between Gittens and Chelsea had long been agreed, and can now be signed.

Fabrizio Romano’s Tweet about Jamie Gittens’s transfer.

Romano doesn’t mention a transfer fee but Ben Jacobs has swiftly followed up the breaking news with a claim that the deal is worth “around £55m”, including add ons.

It’s a big fee for a player with little pedigree, but if the scouts think his potential is really sky high, it could yet prove to be a bargain.

This seems like exactly what Dortmund wanted a month ago – surely we could have just paid up then and had the youngster training and playing with Enzo Maresca already by now?

Chelsea sign up another raw talent with a high ceiling

Chelsea had reportedly been planning to sign a winger for some time, and that need only grew more serious when Jadon Sancho’s loan was not made permanent, and when Mykhailo Mudryk’s ban was made more official. Gittens brings an extra body and plenty of potential – but will he bring game changing ability right off the bat? Possibly not. Even many Dortmund fans aren’t totally convinced with his ability.

Still, working in a youthful Chelsea team, he’s got the chance to turn his exceptional one on one ability into a more well rounded profile. We’re excited to have him on board. What a shame we couldn’t get a deal done in time for him to play for us in the USA.
