Dorival Júnior has confirmed Alisson will not play for Corinthians, with a proposed loan from São Paulo falling through over costs.

The confirmation came after a 2-1 defeat to Bahia at Vila Belmiro in their Brasileirão opener. According to Globo.com, Corinthians had an agreement with São Paulo for the midfielder at the manager’s request, but refused to pay R$ 1.5 million to finalise the deal.

São Paulo wanted R$ 1 million up front to release Alisson, who visited CT Joaquim Grava, and a further R$ 500,000 in the second half of the year. The agreement also included R$ 1.5 million in bonuses if he played at least 45 minutes in 20 matches or more.

With cash flow issues, Corinthians did not have the funds to complete the loan. President Osmar Stabile resisted adding to the strained finances at São Paulo’s asking price.

Dorival said he was sorry to miss out on a player he values and whose profile he needed, adding it was close but the club would move on.

Corinthians have already announced Gabriel Paulista, Matheus Pereira and Pedro Milans, and Kaio César is the fourth addition to be announced.
