Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can has torn the cruciate ligament in his left knee and faces a long absence, the club said in a statement this afternoon.

The 32-year-old sustained the injury in a tangle with Konrad Laimer on 38 minutes during the 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich. He continued despite the pain before being replaced by Rami Bensebaini shortly before the interval.

Such injuries typically require 8-12 months of recovery, so Can is expected to be sidelined for a considerable period.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl described the setback as extremely bitter for the group, highlighting that the skipper always puts the team first and remains an important figure at the club.

He added that Dortmund will give Can full support in the coming months to help him make a complete recovery.
