DR Congo are now just 180 minute away from ending 52 year World Cup absence after edging Nigeria 4-3 on penalties in tense CAF play off final in Rabat on Sunday night.

After 1-1 draw across 120 gruelling minute at Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Sebastien Desabre’s men held their nerve from the spot to seal Africa’s ticket to the 2026 inter confederation play offs in Mexico.

Onyeka strikes early, Elia answers back

Nigeria made the perfect start. Inside the opening minutes, midfielder Frank Onyeka capitalised on loose defensive sequence to fire the Super Eagles ahead — a goal that reflected their sharp, dominant opening phase and the confidence gained from their 4-1 extra time win over Gabon in the semi final.

But DR Congo who had reached the final thanks to Chancel Mbemba’s stoppage time winner against Cameroon refused to fold.

On the half hour mark, a misjudged Nigerian build up invited pressure and Meschack Elia pounced racing in behind before sliding composed finish past the keeper to make it 1-1 transforming both the momentum and the intensity of the match.

A physical, tactical battle to the finish

From that moment, the game became war of territory and transitions. Nigeria pushed through their wingers; DR Congo stayed compact, broke quickly and leaned on Elia’s diagonal runs.

Neither side managed to break through in regulation or extra time as fatigue & tension took over.

Penalties decide Africa’s final ticket

In the shootout, DR Congo converted four of their five attempt while Nigeria missed twice — enough to send the Leopards into wild celebrations and move them within touching distance of first World Cup since 1974 (as Zaire).

What comes next

DR Congo will now compete in the 2026 inter confederation play offs in Guadalajara & Monterrey from 23 - 31 March 2026, a six team tournament with two World Cup places up for grabs.
