Retaining their best talent is understandably the priority, but the financial realities of remaining in the Championship mean difficult decisions are never too far away.

Interest in several members of the Southampton squad has intensified in recent weeks, leaving Dragan Solak and the club's hierarchy with a delicate balancing act.

They will want to remain somewhere between competitive on the pitch while also protecting the long-term value of their assets. Solak has laid out his intentions to retain Southampton's best players, but the reality is that some of their best players will depart and Leeds United's pursuit of one of Southampton's brightest prospects only underlines that challenge.

Daniel Farke's side are looking to strengthen following survival in their first season back to the Premier League and have identified the Saints as a club possessing players capable of making the step up.

With all that said regarding Charles, Southampton remain under little pressure to rush into an agreement with the West Yorkshire outfit. That is exactly the stance they should continue to take as things seem to have stalled. If keeping hold of one of their prized youngsters proves impossible, then ensuring they receive full market value becomes absolutely essential.

Southampton have shown in the recent past that they are capable of standing firm, even when Premier League interest becomes intense; that approach has already paid dividends for them, but there are also players that highlight why standing firm is best. The best example is that of Mateus Fernandes.

When West Ham United came calling last summer, Southampton resisted any temptation to accept a cut-price offer despite their relegation. Fernandes ultimately departed for around £42 million (Sky Sports), which was a sizeable fee for a player still developing his game.

Just a year later, West Ham have agreed an £85 million sale to Tottenham Hotspur. On the one hand, it vindicates Southampton's valuation and proving there was never any need to panic or compromise. On the other, it shows that they could perhaps have pushed for even more given the sort of price he has since gone for with another relegated side.

However, most crucially, that precedent should now shape the club's approach to Charles. In truth, many Southampton supporters believe Charles has an even higher ceiling than Fernandes did during his time at St. Mary's as well, making it even more crucial to not bend to Leeds or anyone else.

The Northern Ireland international has already demonstrated his versatility, running power, and decent composure in midfield, while his age suggests there is still considerable room for development. It's entirely plausible he gets way beyond his current value in a few seasons and that's why that and those qualities naturally make him an attractive proposition for clubs such as Leeds.

But his attributes suiting the current Premier League meta for a midfielder also strengthen Southampton's negotiating position rather than weaken it. If Leeds genuinely believe Charles can become a key Premier League midfielder for years to come, then Southampton are perfectly entitled to demand a fee that reflects that belief.

Figures of £20 million-£25 million may sound substantial on the surface, but in the current market they arguably undervalue one of the Championship's most exciting young midfielders. It was recently claimed that Southampton are asking for around £30 million for Charles.

That is more like it for a player with essentially two years remaining on his contract due to their option to extend, and with no pressing need to sell immediately, meaning the Saints hold many of the cards here. That is where Solak's resolve will be tested.

It can be tempting for the recently relegated clubs to cash in quickly, particularly when you then miss out on an immediate bounce back up and when sizeable offers arrive early in the transfer window. However, Southampton have already demonstrated that patience can be rewarded.

Had they accepted a lower bid for Fernandes, they would have missed out on millions of pounds that ultimately reflected his true market value. They could have possibly waited longer and got even more for a now £85 million footballer. Charles may yet remain at St. Mary's for another season, which would surely be Southampton's preferred outcome.

But if his departure becomes inevitable, the Fernandes transfer should serve as the blueprint to follow. Hold firm, resist external pressure, and insist on a valuation that reflects both current quality and future potential. Whether that means pushing closer to £30 million or securing a lucrative sell-on clause, Southampton cannot afford to undersell another elite young talent.

The bottom line is, if Leeds want Charles badly enough, Southampton should make sure they pay accordingly. West Ham did it to Spurs with Fernandes and the Saints can make Leeds do similar, even if it won't be anything close to £85 million.
