FC Bayern came through with a 3-1 win at 1. FC Köln, but one moment caused discussion despite the victory. Manuel Neuer was in the spotlight for the only goal conceded – and had to face criticism afterwards
In the 41st minute, Cologne’s Linton Maina took a shot from around 16 metres out. The ball came towards goal at speed, Neuer was still there with both hands but was unable to prevent the shot. For a brief moment, the underdogs were surprisingly in the lead. The Bayern captain’s body language spoke volumes: Neuer remained on the ground and buried his face in his arms, visibly unhappy with his own actions
During the live broadcast on Sky, Lothar Matthäus had clear words to say. The record international clearly assessed Maina’s finish and said that the shot was „tenable“ – an assessment that immediately caused a stir
Neuer himself confronted the scene after the final whistle and defended his actions: „It wasn’t that short. Very central, he can shoot anywhere,“ explained the 39-year-old, adding: „I try to do my best. And then it’s 1-0 to FC.“
The goal Bayern conceded had no sporting consequences. Serge Gnabry equalized before the break in stoppage time. After the break, Min-jae Kim and Lennart Karl finally turned the game in Munich’s favour and secured another away win

Sporting director Max Eberl also defended Neuer. The 52-year-old pointed out the difficult situation for a goalkeeper when finishing from this distance. It can always happen „that the hand doesn’t get completely behind it with all its strength“, explained Eberl. „And then it looks like this. No reproach from my side.“
