Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0 (4-0 on aggregate) – Wednesday 5 February 8pm
Any thoughts of United sitting back, quickly dispelled.
A superb start and Alexander Isak ‘scoring’ after only four minutes.
Gordon producing a superb pass to release him into the right hand channel and he was away, lashing it into the far top corner.
A lengthy VAR check deciding offside, I have just seen the ‘lines’ that were drawn and they looked level at worst to me.
Only delaying the inevitable though.
Alexander Isak bullying his marker when a long ball is played, breaking past him and a luscious left foot shot beats Raya again, only to hit the left post, bouncing across goal for Murphy to score with what wasn’t a totally easy finish. Have seen plenty of those missed.
The atmosphere superb and that goal lifting it even higher.
Arsenal having to go for it and a very open game, a flurry of decent play for Arsenal around Newcastle’s box, ball breaking for Odegaard inside the penalty area but with Dubravka to beat, hits it wide!
However, once Newcastle got over those few minutes they looked very comfortable.
As usual, Arsenal diving all over the place, Havertz predictably the worst offender, as the visitors clearly frustrated by Newcastle bossing this.
Half-time arriving just after Havertz showing his other side, with a nasty sly foul.
If anybody thought Newcastle would be sitting back defensively and Arsenal dominating, think again.
Eddie Howe’s side allowing loads of pointless possession but then ready to pounce.
Gordon won the ball off the last defender a few minutes into the second half but instead of running clear towards goal with Isak likely alongside him, he chose to try and shoot from distance with Raya off his line.
A yard wide of the post and Arsenal off the hook. Though not for long…
Showing how ‘negative’ Newcastle United’s approach was, an Arsenal defender caught in possession on the edge of his own box by Fabian Schar! He slid in to dispossess and Gordon this time tucked it away, seven minutes into the second period.
From there, it was party time.
Newcastle United so comfortable, Mikel Arteta accepting he had been totally schooled yet again by Eddie Howe. The embarrassing Arsenal boss running out of excuses and simply subbing his better players.
So many Arsenal players showing how they can’t hack it when on the losing side, Declan Rice arguably the most embarrassing worst and should have been red carded. Kavertz another.
Though there again, better to keep them on the pitch to take this totally one-sided walkover.
Eddie Howe 3 Mikel Arteta 0 this season, three wins for NUFC over Arsenal and five goals scored with none conceded in over five hours of football.
United off to Wembley and Arsenal well beaten.
