He had six months remaining on his deal, which was due to run until December this year.

Cavani arrived in mid-2023 hailed as one of the best signings in Argentine football history, yet departs without an official title.

He played 81 matches, scoring 28 goals and supplying 12 assists. He completed only 27 games and logged 5,860 minutes, averaging a goal every 209 minutes.

In recent seasons he struggled for game time, netting two goals in the Torneo Apertura under Fernando Gago. He added three more across the Clausura 2025 and the Copa Argentina with Miguel Ángel Russo in charge.

A herniated disc and chronic lumbar issues persisted despite various treatments and surgeries. He featured only twice, off the bench against Platense and from the start versus Racing, and was booed at full time in both matches despite earlier tributes in the Bombonera stands.

After undergoing another operation to ease his back pain, the latest procedure did not have the desired effect. Boca’s hierarchy, alongside new coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena, sought to lighten the wage bill and assemble a squad with many new faces.
