The club said in a statement that Edinson Cavani has lower-back pain, which has kept him out of group training. In response, Boca’s medical staff and the Uruguayan striker have adopted targeted measures to accelerate his return while protecting performance.

In recent hours he underwent a lumbar block aimed at the source of the discomfort. The procedure is designed to raise his pain tolerance for a defined period. If his response is favourable, it could allow high-intensity efforts without inflammation becoming debilitating during matches.

Even so, the timeline looks tight before competitive action. Boca have two pre-season friendlies, first against Millonarios of Colombia and then against Olimpia in San Nicolás. Given the proximity and the need for the treatment to take effect, it is considered unlikely he will feature against the Paraguayan side, with coaches keen not to rush him.

Attention now turns to Sunday 25 January, when Boca open the Torneo Apertura against Deportivo Riestra at La Bombonera. The success of the block will be decisive in determining whether the forward can lead the line in the official debut.

If the plan works as intended and his pain threshold stabilises, Cavani would be in much better condition to feature in front of the home crowd.
