Manchester United’s hunt to sign Eduardo Camavinga has taken a sharp twist after the Real Madrid star sparked anger in the Spanish capital, according to new reports.

Midfield Rebuild

The Red Devils are prioritising an overhaul of their midfield unit this summer, with Casemiro set to depart and Manuel Ugarte incapable of deputising for the Brazilian. The club’s primary targets are a selection of the Premier League’s finest, headed by Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Sandro Tonali.

However, the recruitment team are also looking at “eyebrow-raising” options in Spain, according to Athletic reporter Andy Mitten, who maintains excellent contacts at Old Trafford. Camavinga is understood to be one of these candidates in LaLiga, having been on United’s radar before his move to the Santiago Bernabéu from Ligue 1 side Rennes in 2021.

The France international has endured a miserable campaign for Los Blancos. A combination of injuries and poor performances has seen him fall down the pecking order, with his red card in the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich a pivotal moment in his side’s defeat.

Madrid are understood to be open to a sale this summer to fund the acquisition of a deep-lying playmaker as links to Manchester City maestro Rodri ramp up. Spanish outlet Defensa Central contends president Florentino Pérez is demanding €70m (£61m) to sanction Camavinga’s sale – with a host of top clubs on red alert over a summer swoop.

A report relayed by The Peoples Person reveals the Red Devils are showing the “most concrete interest” alongside Arsenal, while Liverpool and Chelsea are also in the race. Paris Saint-Germain are another potential suitor, though the European champions are well stocked in midfield.

Camavinga wants to stay put

Despite Madrid’s plan to bolster their summer war chest, Marca contends Camavinga has “no intention of leaving the club” at the end of the season. The Spanish newspaper, which maintains close ties to the Madrid hierarchy, describes the sending off in the defeat to Bayern as the “final straw”.

However, the Angola native, whose place with the French squad at the World Cup is far from certain, is resolute in his desire to remain a Madridista, regardless of any interest from England. “He is a highly sought-after player, but the Frenchman has no intention of giving up, much less leaving Real Madrid.”

The report concludes that Camavinga has one goal: “win back the hearts of Real Madrid fans and the Bernabéu crowd.”

Final Thoughts

United’s interest in Camavinga, a classy operator with a wealth of experience at the highest level of club and international football, was smart. A fee in the region of £60m is excellent value in comparison to the prices being quoted for less talented midfielders in the Premier League.

However, if a player has no desire to leave his current club, it requires a hostile reaction from his employers to force him out the exit door. INEOS have prioritised recruits who view Old Trafford as the pinnacle of their career, not a back-up because their first choice failed.
