Eduardo Camavinga has made his position clear to his agent on a potential departure from Real Madrid this summer, as per a new report.
Camavinga has been among the names linked with a switch to the Etihad Stadium in recent weeks, with Manchester City‘s need for midfield reinforcement and the France international’s standing as one of Europe’s most versatile young midfielders making him a natural fit for the kind of profile director of football Hugo Viana is prioritising in the market.
The 23-year-old’s ability to operate across midfield and at left-back has long made him one of the most coveted squad assets at Real Madrid, and his adaptability would have held obvious appeal for Enzo Maresca as he looks to assemble a squad capable of accommodating the tactical flexibility his system demands at the Etihad Stadium.
Real Madrid offer midfielder to Manchester City – Direct contacts held between two clubs
Reports had suggested that Real Madrid could be willing to sanction a departure for Camavinga as part of a wider squad reshuffle at the Santiago Bernabeu, opening the door to interest from clubs across Europe, with Manchester City among those credited with an interest in the France international this summer.
However, the latest update on the situation makes clear that any pursuit of Camavinga would face a significant and perhaps insurmountable obstacle in the form of the player’s own firmly stated desire to remain in the Spanish capital.
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Camavinga has a “very clear intention” and has communicated it directly to his agent – namely that he wants to stay at Real Madrid, play for Los Blancos and remain part of the Jose Mourinho‘s squad for the 2026-27 campaign.
Romano reports that the France international “doesn’t want to leave” and “feels he can have a future and career at Real Madrid” – a position that appears to close off any realistic prospect of a move to Manchester City or elsewhere this summer regardless of the interest that has been generated in his signature.
Crucially, the report indicates a divergence between club and player on the matter, with Real Madrid said to be “open to selling” Camavinga even as the midfielder himself remains resolute in his determination to stay and fight for his place at the Santiago Bernabeu next season.
That tension between a club willing to cash in and a player unwilling to move is one that rarely resolves quickly, and while it does not entirely extinguish the possibility of a future exit, it strongly suggests that any club hoping to sign Camavinga this summer would need to convince the player himself before any negotiation with Real Madrid could gather momentum.
Enzo Maresca outlines Man City transfer market ambitions after £116M Elliot Anderson capture
The clarity of Camavinga’s position represents a setback for any club harbouring genuine hopes of signing him, and for Manchester City it reinforces the reality that Viana’s midfield rebuild is likely to be built around alternative targets rather than a player who has so publicly committed his immediate future to a rival European giant.
City are set to confirm a club record £116 million capture of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest as the centrepiece of their midfield reconstruction – and their continued interest in players such as Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi suggests that planning in that area is well advanced and not dependent on prising an unwilling player away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
Maresca’s preference for adaptable, technically accomplished midfielders means Camavinga would have represented an ideal addition in a footballing sense, but the player’s stance underlines the difficulty of competing for elite talent whose current clubs can offer both the prestige and the sporting project to retain them against outside interest.
Whether Real Madrid’s openness to a sale eventually shifts the balance in the months ahead remains to be seen, but for this summer at least, Camavinga’s message to his agent appears to have settled the matter – and Manchester City will look elsewhere as they continue to build the squad Maresca requires at the Etihad Stadium.
