A Championship club has reportedly raised concerns over a potential conflict of interest involving Blackburn and Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill.
O’Neill took charge of Rovers earlier this season while retaining the national job, a dual role until the campaign’s end. The EFL said it had been contacted by one or more clubs about the situation. It added it is not a league matter, that FIFA governs call-ups and managers pick squads independently, and that it expects selections to be made with integrity and not bring the game into disrepute.
Debate has centred on Northern Ireland call-ups from Blackburn’s relegation rivals. Albion’s Isaac Price is in O’Neill’s squad, and Portsmouth also have a player involved.
Northern Ireland face Wales in a friendly on Tuesday. The discussion has grown in the days leading up to that game.
Albion, Pompey, Blackburn and Oxford are all fighting for Championship survival.
