Egypt’s camp reacted furiously after a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in Atlanta in the last 16, accusing referee Francois Letexier and alleging the tournament favours Lionel Scaloni’s side.
According to SuperDepor.com, Mostafá Ziko, scorer of Egypt’s second, offered sarcastic congratulations to Argentina for the World Cup and strongly criticised the French official.
The team’s complaints included a Ziko finish ruled out while Argentina led 1-0, with the referee punishing an earlier foul on Lisandro Martínez elsewhere in the move.
They also protested that a challenge on Mohammed Salah in the area went unpunished in the build-up to Enzo Fernández’s third for the Albiceleste in added time.
Head coach Hossam Hassan blamed Letexier for the 3-2 loss to the Qatar 2022 world champions, alleged the match was fixed and questioned why others should compete if Argentina are meant to win, while praising his players and saying they leave with heads held high. He further claimed pressure from Argentina influenced the officiating and cited the referee’s nationality as a factor.
