Egypt boss Hossam Hassan says that his side’s 3-2 loss to Argentina at the World Cup was an “injustice”.

Argentina were 2-0 down with less than 15 minutes to go after Mostafa Zico and Yasser Ibrahim had scored for Egypt, but late goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez made sure the reigning world champions progressed to the quarter finals of the competition.

Zico had a goal disallowed for Egypt after a VAR check deemed that Lisandro Martinez had been fouled, before the Egyptian did put his side two ahead later on in the second half.

This was not the only time that the north African side felt aggrieved by VAR. Two minutes into injury time at the end of the second half, Fernandez headed in Argentina’s winner; however, the Egypt squad felt there had been a foul on Mohamed Salah in the build-up to the goal. VAR did check the challenge, but nothing was given.

“Life is unfair. The world is unfair. Okay, but why isn’t there any fairness in sports? I’m not convinced by this outcome and by the way things unfolded in this match,” Hassan said.

“The referee is unfair, God is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. He’s wasting the effort of an entire nation. The cup is directed towards Argentina.

“We were the best in everything, but the result was… there were factors influencing it, not external, but internal on the pitch, and external before the match,” explained Hassan.

“It is clear that the pressure put on the referee before the match by the Argentine side succeeded, because they objected to the referee, bringing up France, and the France national team.

“Argentina’s victory is entirely undeserved. And I promise you, once I return today, I will not watch football in this World Cup at all, because there is no justice in it.”

FIFA have been approached for comment.
