Wendell Lira, the 2015 FIFA Puskás Award winner and a boyhood Flamengo fan, was moved to tears while buying his five-year-old son’s first club kit. According to Coluna Do Fla, the former striker, now a professional gamer, made the purchase in the Flamengo club shop.
In the store he reflected on childhood dreams of becoming a footballer, recalling how he would run around pretending to be a player. He remembered his mother giving him a simple Flamengo outfit, which he wore to play with his brother.
The 37-year-old said the moment felt special, noting that it might seem small but time passes and he now feels able to do for his son what he could not do when younger.
Lira rose to global prominence in 2015 with a brilliant strike for Goianésia against Atlético-GO, part volley and part bicycle kick, which earned him the Puskás Award. Despite the international acclaim, he retired in 2016 at 27.
He then switched to professional e-sports and has said he earns more now than during his playing days, with greater financial stability for his family. In January this year he added that the e-sports world is very large and many people may not yet grasp its scale.
