Bild reports that the futures of a quartet of players at Borussia Dortmund are uncertain, with their deals expiring in the summer.
Emre Can, Niklas Süle, Pascal Groß and Julian Brandt’s futures at the Signal Iduna Park are all up in the air as they approach the end of their deals. With all earning a significant salary, Dortmund want to try and reduce their wage bill.
Can, who is also the captain, is highly regarded by both the club and head coach Niko Kovac. Dortmund are open to extending his deal by another year, but he would have to accept a pay cut.
Centre-back Süle is Dortmund’s highest earner, and under Kovac, he is still a useful member of the squad. However, the fact that he earns €14m a year is the sticking point. If die Schwarzgelben wishes to extend the contract of the 30-year-old, he will have to take a big salary deduction with a deal that would be more performance-based.
It is likely that this will be Pascal Groß’s last season at the club. Despite him still being important when it comes to his ball-playing ability, he is simply not able to keep up with the pace. At 34 years old, he is no longer a regular in the team.
Finally, it was previously reported that Brandt is playing for his future. If he maintains his early-season form, then a contract extension at Dortmund is not ruled out. The 29-year-old would like to stay at the club as he still feels comfortable and at home.
