Jude Bellingham struck from a corner on 62 minutes, then set up Harry Kane on 67, as England beat Panama 2-0 on Saturday. Both goals came down Amir Murillo’s flank, rounding off a bruising night for the right-back.
L'Équipe’s player ratings underlined Bellingham’s influence and highlighted the contrasting fortunes on show.
Earlier he pinged a switch to Bukayo Saka on 15 minutes and threaded a superb pass for Kane on 57, which went unused.
Forest midfielder Anderson looked composed despite persistent talk linking him with City, recovering seven balls. He drove a strike from range on 35 and whipped in a fine cross for Marcus Rashford on 38.
For Panama, the Norwich defender Cordoba was outstanding at the back, delaying England with timely interventions on 50 against Rashford and on 52 in front of Kane, and he was not culpable for either goal. On the right, Martinez’s touch and vision stood out, releasing Murillo on 34 and delivering a cut-back for Diaz on 76, and despite a heavy Quansah stamp on 49 he kept causing problems.
Rogers underwhelmed on his first World Cup start as a No 10, losing 10 balls and offering little without possession. With Reece James out, right-back looked a concern as Quansah attempted no crosses and was withdrawn injured on 63. Murillo lost a dangerous ball to Rashford on 55, passed up a shot at 0-0 on 34 and then dragged wide on 64, while Fajarda, on at half-time for Tomas Rodriguez, was booked for a shirt pull on 53, offered little with his back to goal, and saw a 90+2 finish correctly flagged offside.
