Elliot Anderson, Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke also impress as Three Lions deliver scintillating second half in Dallas
England’s World Cup campaign got off to a magnificent start as they beat Croatia 4-2 in a Group L thriller.
Harry Kane scored twice for England during a first half in which goals by Martin Baturina and Petar Musa had Croatia level at 2-2 at the break.
But a much-improved England turned on the style after the interval and took control of the group with excellent goals by Jude Bellingham and substitute Marcus Rashford.
Standard Sport’s Dom Smith was at Dallas Stadium to rate the England players’ performances…
Jordan Pickford 7
Could perhaps have done better with Baturina’s opener but then made plenty of important saves to keep England ahead.
Reece James 7
Confident at the back for England. Sensible on the ball and allowed Madueke, ahead of him, to bomb on.
John Stones 6
Was sent to the floor by Petar Sucic far too easily in the lead-up to Croatia’s first goal. Otherwise OK.
Nico O’Reilly 6
Composed on the ball for the most part but should have done better with a free header and his positioning wasn’t always brilliant.
Declan Rice 7
Assisted Kane’s header with a fantastic corner delivery. Looked like he might have been limping when he came off.
Elliot Anderson 8
Superb in the middle of the park, assisting Bellingham’s winner with a beautiful arcing ball over the top.
Noni Madueke 8
One of England’s brightest players on his World Cup debut. A constant threat down the right before he was taken off.
Jude Bellingham 8
Energetic and excellent. Scored the winning goal but also put in an almighty shift in closing down and pressing.
Anthony Gordon 6
A quiet showing from the left winger, who did have a couple of shots closed down. Taken off in place of fourth goalscorer Rashford.
Harry Kane 8
Scored both of England’s first two goals and led from the front, also dropping in to help out defensively. A fine shift from England’s captain.
Marcus Rashford (Gordon, 73’) 8
An unerring finish made sure of victory for England as the left winger made an impact off the bench.
Bukayo Saka (Madueke, 73’) 7
Calmly slotted the ball to Rashford to set up England’s fantastic fourth goal.
Morgan Rogers (Rice, 73’) 6
One Croatia player found it too easy to cut inside Rogers and fire on goal late on. Rogers will play plenty of football at this tournament.
Djed Spence (Bellingham, 79’) N/A
Marc Guehi (Stones, 87’) N/A
Not used: D Henderson, Trafford, Burn, Quansah, Eze, J Henderson, Mainoo, Toney, Watkins.
