According to ExpressAndStar.com, England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sports Science by the University of Wolverhampton, recognising her outstanding contribution to sport and her impact on inspiring young athletes.

The Birmingham-born former Aston Villa player grew up a West Brom fan and attended Chase Grammar School in Cannock.

Her football journey began in Spain after her family moved there when she was five, initially as a striker. On returning to England she switched to goalkeeper, progressing through Stoke City’s academy before joining Birmingham City.

Now at Chelsea, she made her senior England debut in 2022 and has since become the Lionesses’ first-choice goalkeeper. She featured in the Euro 2022 triumph, helped reach the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, and played a key role in winning Euro 2025.

The honour also reflects her determination in overcoming strabismus, an eye condition that can affect depth perception and vision. Her story is seen as an example to aspiring athletes, and she has helped raise the profile of girls’ football across the West Midlands.
