The list of his prospective replacements remains long, with Lee Carsley - the current Under-21 boss, Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino among the names. However, Manchester City boss Guardiola is also on England's radar and the country may be willing to act smart to bring him in.

The Independent writes that the FA are keen on the skillset displayed by the City boss, in particular his ability to win trophies. It's thought that Guardiola could leave his current employer at the end of the coming season, with his contract set to expire in 2025.

The FA remain keen to make a quick decision, but may appoint the Carsley as interim manager while they wait to tempt Guardiola. This move may sound familiar, as Southgate was first appointed in the same way, before going on to enjoy eight years in charge of the national team.

It's thought that an international management job would appeal to Guardiola, who has spent the last eight years guiding City to unprecedented dominance in England. If he is to depart the Premier League next summer, the FA believe they may be able to secure his signature.

The European Championship may have only just come to an end, but England will soon look ahead to the 2026 World Cup, with qualification for the tournament scheduled for March.
