Enzo Maresca has just taken his post-match press conference, and there were some things we really wanted an update on.
We heard in his Friday press conference that Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia had not trained after picking up knocks. But we didn’t get any more information than that. Neither of them were in the squad tonight, not a good sign.
Speaking afterwards, the Italian coach has given a little more insight:
“Romeo is a more important [injury] than the Enzo one, We don’t know how long they will be out… both injuries were against Bournemouth. Muscular problems, muscle issues,” the manager said.
The idea that Lavia has any kind of issue, having just returned to the team after missing a chunk of this season, after missing the WHOLE of last season, is just mind boggling. If it’s anything more than another week out we will really have to upgrade him to a very high level of concern about his long term fragility.
Romeo Lavia lies stricken after a blow to the head.
The fact that Lavia and Enzo are both midfielders isn’t helping either. Moises Caicedo had to play 90 minutes again today – he needs a break or he’ll be the next one out hurt.
Either a loan player who is comfortable replacing Caicedo or playing alongside him needs to be recalled, or we need to buy someone, or promote a youngster. This is unsustainable, even if Enzo is back for the weekend. Marc Cucurella played the last ten minutes in midfield tonight, that won’t last long against Man City.
The silly insistence on replacing Conor Gallagher with more attacking players in the form of Joao Felix and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is already coming back to bite us. We’ve got unhappy attackers on the bench, and no spare number 6s.
