Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca remains interested in signing Enzo Fernandez and Malo Gusto from former club Chelsea this summer, as per reports.

The past months have been a busy transition period for City, with the Italian coach taking over the reins from Pep Guardiola after his illustrious decade-long tenure, followed by new additions, including the £116 million club-record signing of Elliot Anderson.

The summer saw several notable departures from the Etihad Stadium as well, including Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake, leading to the English club being very active in the ongoing transfer window.

And now, it appears that Manchester City plan on further strengthening their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, and a potential reunion between Maresca and the Chelsea duo could be back on the table.

Report: Man City’s interest in Enzo Fernandez intensifies amid Rodri uncertainty

With the new season approaching in the next few weeks, Manchester City have been handed a setback with regard to their talented midfield maestro, Rodri.

The 30-year-old delivered a series of stellar performances and was instrumental in Spain’s 2026 World Cup victory after facing injury struggles in the last two campaigns.

While City and Maresca were counting on the midfielder’s return to his stride for the club in the upcoming season, doubts and uncertainties over his future at the Etihad Stadium have surfaced.

Real Madrid have been heavily linked to making a move for the Spaniard, who is now in the last year of his current contract, and the Spanish giants are reportedly ready to offer a bid up to £100 million to secure his services.

While several reports have suggested that the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner could be open to joining the La Liga side, Manchester City are not ready to part ways with him as of yet and are working on extending his stay at the club.

Rodri is also set to undergo surgery on a back injury with no confirmed timetable for his return, calling for a possible change of plans for Maresca in the initial stages of the campaign.

Amid these uncertainties, Manchester City are revisiting their interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Fernandez, who is reportedly keen on a departure from Stamford Bridge.

However, according to CaughtOffside, while the Argentina star is on City’s list of potential midfield transfer options, Chelsea’s high asking price of £120 million for him is a major issue.

Even though, in the event of Rodri’s departure, Fernandez would be a great choice, especially given his history with Maresca, to complement Anderson in the midfield, Manchester City would like to negotiate a deal under £100m with the London club.

The 25-year-old has six more years left in his current contract at Chelsea, running until the summer of 2032.

Are Chelsea open to parting ways with Malo Gusto?

Manchester City are also eyeing a potential signing of Chelsea defender Malo Gusto following reported previous attempts.

The aforementioned report further suggested that Maresca is an admirer of the Frenchman and is more likely to prefer having a natural right-back in the squad over Matheus Nunes, who adjusted well in the role under Guardiola despite initially being a midfielder.

However, Manchester City are reportedly hit with a similar bump in the road in the 23-year-old’s pursuit, as Chelsea have put a hefty price tag on him, hinting that the Premier League rivals are not very keen on negotiations or letting go of the player.

Gusto, meanwhile, could be interested in the possible move to City under Maresca, with his current contract at Chelsea valid until the summer of 2030.
