Enzo Maresca has made it clear Jorrel Hato needs time to adapt after making his first Premier League start in the draw against Brentford.

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw despite being 2-1 ahead heading into stoppage time, but conceded a last gasp equaliser from a long throw in.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo put Chelsea ahead after a poor first half, and although the Blues remain unbeaten it was a bitter pill to swallow.

Enzo Maresca speaks on Jorrel Hato

It was no surprise to see Maresca makes changes to the line-up given the injury issues and the international break.

Hato was one of four changes, and the Dutch international was handed his first start of the season in place of Marc Cucurella.

The 19-year old had a difficult time and didn’t offer much going forward, before being replaced at half time by Marc Cucurella.

Hato arrived from Ajax this summer, and it’s clearly going to take him time to get up  to speed, something Maresca was keen to stress after the game.

“We planned not all of the game for Jorrel because he needs time to adapt,” he told Football London.

There’s no doubt Hato will improve, and perhaps his next opportunity to start will come against Lincoln in the Carabao Cup third round.

Chelsea still a work in progress

Despite remaining unbeaten it’s clear the Blues are still a work in progress, and it will take time for the new players to settle in and adapt.

There’s certainly quantity in the squad, but whether there’s enough quality remains to be seen as the season goes on.

There’s real depth in midfield, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at centre back or in the number nine role , and it will be interesting to see how it works out over the course of the season.
