He was an integral part of United’s return to the top of the English football pyramid in the 1990s.

The charismatic star played an instrumental part in the Red Devils winning the league title four times in the five seasons he was at the club.

The Frenchman recently hit the headlines when he became a co-owner of FC United of Manchester, a local side set up in protest at the Glazer family’s takeover of United in 2005.

He posted on Instagram, “proud new member of FC United with the whole Cantona family. Join FC United of Manchester, it’s just 25 pounds.”

Cantona was present on social media again to demonstrate his support of the anti-Glazer movement on X.

Yesterday, the club posted a picture of Cantona in a green and gold FC United of Manchester shirt and wrote under the caption, “today marks 20 years since the Glazer takeover. Two decades of debt, greed and decay, with no regard for the supporters or soul of Manchester United.”

“Eric Cantona wears our shirt to remind everyone: ‘Football belongs to the fans’.”

Cantona famously offered to work with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos when they took charge of United but he has claimed that they did not take him up on the offer.

FC United of Manchester have recently joined forces with United fan group, the 1958, and they have held a joint protest against the Glazer ownership.

The 1958 will hold a final demonstration of the season when United welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford on Sunday 25th May.
