Ethan Nwaneri’s loan to Marseille includes play-time incentives, with OM covering his full salary and a sliding discount on the loan fee tied to appearances.

According to L'Équipe, the 19-year-old Arsenal forward extended his contract last summer to 2030 and now earns nearly 300,000 euros per month.

After a 37-game campaign across competitions, he drew interest amid issues affecting Arsenal’s attacking options, while benefiting from Mikel Arteta’s faith in Academy prospects such as Myles Lewis-Skelly.

With a year left on his deal in June, Chelsea and Manchester United showed interest, but Arsenal renewed him on terms reflecting his performances and potential. Those wages did not bring more minutes, and the return of senior players limited him to 12 games this season, prompting a loan to OM in late January. The move was eased by the good relations between former OM president Pablo Longoria and Arsenal.

Arsenal have used similar appearance-linked mechanisms in previous OM loans for William Saliba in 2021 to 2022 and Nuno Tavares in 2022 to 2023, with rebates applied by match thresholds at season’s end.

Since arriving, the England Under-21 international has featured in almost every match, sometimes for only a minute, missing only Strasbourg and Toulouse in the league.
