European football in shock at the death of Alexander Manninger | OneFootball

Alexander Manninger died on Thursday aged 48 after a traffic accident in the Salzburg region, his home city.

According to Superdeporte, his vehicle was struck by a train while crossing a level crossing in Nußdorf am Haunsberg, in the Flachgau district. Emergency crews arrived quickly and pulled him from the wreckage, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The train driver was unhurt and an investigation is ongoing.

Manninger began his career in Austria before moving to the Premier League with Arsenal in 1997.

He later played in Italy for Fiorentina, Bologna, Torino, Brescia, Siena, Udinese and Juventus. He also featured in Germany with Augsburg, establishing himself as a dependable and experienced goalkeeper.

In the final phase of his career, he was linked to Espanyol after signing in 2022, although he did not make an official appearance for the Catalan side.

His death has left supporters, former team-mates and the clubs he represented deeply saddened. European football is mourning a respected professional defined by hard work, consistency and quiet dignity.
