A total of eight City stars have played key roles to help their respective nations reach the knockout stages, with Kerstin Casparij and Vivianne Miedema’s Netherlands narrowly missing out.

Here’s how it unfolded…..

England

Coming into the tournament as reigning European Champions all eyes were on the Lionesses, and the pressure was on.

During the group stage of Euro 2022, England won all three matches without conceding a single goal.

But the 2022 finalists haven’t found it as easy this time around as they started their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to France.

After losing their first match, the current holders clawed back momentum and found the perfect response with blockbuster wins over the Netherlands and Wales, scoring 10 goals across those two fixtures.

England will be hoping for a repeat of the 2022 semi-final when they face a strong Sweden side in Thursday's quarter-final.

Spain

As expected, the World Champions had an exceptional start to the tournament and dominated Group B with a 100% win rate.

They cruised past Portugal after netting five goals before they recorded their 6-2 victory over Belgium.

Rounding off their final group game, Leila Ouahabi’s Spain beat Italy 3-1 and look set to be nailed on to claim the title from the Lionesses.

They scored a total of 14 goals to equal the group-stage record set by England at Euro 2022.

Germany

The 2022 runners up got up and running to the perfect start after back-to-back victories over Poland and Denmark saw them secure second place in Group C.

In their final group match, they suffered a shock 4-1 defeat to Sweden but still qualified for the knockout stages.

It is only the second time Germany have lost a group game and the first time they have conceded four in a Euros match.

They now face France, could we expect to see a reaction similar to the Lionesses’ against the Netherlands?

Switzerland

Iman Beney’s Switzerland have reached the European Championship quarter-finals for the first time, thanks to Riola Xhemaili's stoppage-time equaliser against Finland.

Their first meeting saw them fall to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Norway, but they weren’t going to fall at the first hurdle as they followed it with a convincing 2-0 victory over Iceland.

The hosts wrapped up their group stages in style with a last gasp equaliser that saw them head into the last eight where they face World Champions, Spain.

Netherlands

The 2017 champions were unfortunate to be placed in the toughest group of the tournament, alongside France, England and Wales.

After starting their campaign with a x-0 win over Wales, it looked like it could be the Lionesses that would miss out on the knockout stages.

Unfortunately for the Netherlands, England were ready for revenge following their defeat to France as the Lionesses put four past a stunned ‘Oranje’.

It all went down to the final game, Vivianne Miedema and Kerstin Casparij’s side needed to win the game by at least three goals or rely on Wales upsetting England if they were to reach the quarter-finals.

Despite leading 2-1 at half-time, their hopes were crushed by a fantastic France display which saw them come back to solidify a 5-2 victory and send the Netherlands home.
