Newcastle United return to Premier League action on Saturday looking to steady themselves after their European setback in Marseille. The reality of doing so may be complicated by Everton’s resurgent form and the visitors’ persistent away-day frailties.
Everton enter the weekend in confident mood after taking seven points from their last three league matches to climb into mid-table and reassert some stability.
David Moyes’ side have beaten Fulham and Manchester United without conceding and they now see an opportunity to extend that momentum against an opponent who have struggled badly on the road.
Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat at the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday underlined a trend that has increasingly defined their season.
They once again scored first through the in-form Harvey Barnes but still left empty-handed, continuing a sequence of away defeats that includes losses at Brentford and West Ham where they also took the lead.
Their inability to protect advantages away from St James’ Park has now stretched into a run of nine league matches without an away win, and they are one of only three Premier League sides yet to collect three points on their travels this season.
That contrast with their robust home form has left Eddie Howe’s team in a difficult position as they attempt to respond quickly to their European disappointment.
Newcastle have produced some excellent performances at St James’ Park but have not been able to translate that into the defensive organisation and control required away from home.
Their vulnerability once opponents gain momentum was again exposed in France as two quick goals swung the match, and their mid-table standing reflects that inconsistency.
Everton will feel they are meeting Newcastle at a good moment. Moyes has restored discipline and intensity to the Toffees’ play and their recent results have been built on compact defending and efficiency in transition.
They defeated Newcastle 1-0 in their last meeting at St James’ Park and have collected eight points from the past four fixtures between the sides, giving them further reason to believe they can impose themselves.
Newcastle, however, will know the importance of producing a response. The defeat in Marseille ended another opportunity to go on a run and leaves them searching for stability amid growing frustration over their away form.
Howe’s side remain dangerous when their attacking patterns click, and Barnes’ revival offers encouragement, but they now need an assertive and controlled display to avoid falling further behind their rivals.
