Everton will take on Liverpool this Saturday in their most difficult fixture of the season up to this point.
Liverpool may have faced criticism in recent weeks, but Arne Slot’s team has still managed to defeat every team placed in front of them.
In order for Everton to pick up all three points, they must win at Anfield, which is something Moyes has never been able to accomplish.
However, there have been three occasions when Moyes has got the better of Liverpool in the Premier League as manager of the Toffees.
Before Lee Carsley was taking charge of the England U21s team, he was bossing the midfield at Everton. It was the Irish international’s goal that gave Moyes his first victory over Liverpool.
Possession of the ball was split fairly evenly, but Liverpool were on top for much of the game, landing more shots on target and firing 16 efforts in total. However, Everton remained strong in defence to seal a victory which would go on to be crucial.
Moyes’ team finished three points above Liverpool in the Premier League, which was enough to enter the third round of Champions League qualifying. Unfortunately, they were unable to make it past a strong Villarreal side, who won both legs 2-1.
On a positive note, the victory over Liverpool ended a seven-year wait for Everton to win a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. It also gave Moyes his first victory in the fixture, after four without a win.
Moyes suffered three consecutive defeats after experiencing the sweet taste of victory in the derby, but this would not last forever. He got his second win over Liverpool at Goodison and his team did it in style.
Tim Cahill opened the scoring after 24 minutes and new signing Andy Johnson found the back of the net before half-time, giving Everton a surprise 2-0 lead. The forward ghosted behind Sami Hyypia and bundled through a Jamie Carragher mistake to slide home the second.
Liverpool had plenty of shots during the game, 22 in total, but the only other goal of the match was once again scored by Johnson, in the 94th minute. Pepe Reina was unable to hold onto Lee Carsley’s long-range effort, and Johnson was on hand to nod in after the Spaniard’s blunder.
Everton were more clinical on the day and put on a memorable performance. They would go on to pick a draw at Anfield later in the season and secure a top-six league finish.
The 3-0 win was Everton’s biggest win over Liverpool since a 4-0 victory at Anfield on this very day in 1964. It remains the club’s best derby result this century.
It took Everton four years to win their next league derby, although they did knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup the previous year thanks to a Dan Gosling winner in stoppage time.
Cahill once again opened the scoring in the first half, and Mikel Arteta joined him on the scoresheet five minutes after the conclusion of the interval. Liverpool had full control of the ball, recording 67 per cent of the possession, but Everton were far more effective.
The win was made all the sweeter due to the fact that it was attended by Liverpool’s new owners, who only decided to go at the last minute. Better still, it left the Reds in the relegation zone, with just their goal difference keeping them from falling to rock bottom.
However, Everton would have to wait more than a decade before recording another victory over Liverpool. As well as this, it was the second-to-last time the Toffees ever won the fixture at Goodison Park. The final time was in April last year, when Sean Dyche’s team sealed another 2-0 win.
Moyes will have fond memories of each of these victories, but he has unfinished business against Liverpool. The Scotsman has never won a match as a manager at Anfield, which includes his spells at Manchester United, Sunderland, and West Ham.
His record since returning for a second spell at Everton has offered some hope that he will finally get the better of Liverpool on their own turf. He got a draw in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, and the Anfield return only ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat last season.
This season, Everton have made a strong start, but Liverpool are a different level of opposition to those Moyes and his team have faced. It is first against sixth on Saturday, and all eyes will be on the boys in blue and white.
Expect tough tackles from James Tarkowski, sharp passes from Jack Grealish, and hopefully an Anfield victory, which is long overdue.
