Lee Carsley’s precocious England pupils have done it once again, retaining the U21 European Championship in dramatic fashion.

The Young Lions defeated Germany 3-2 after extra time to lift the trophy for the fourth time ever. Harvey Elliott and Omari Hutchinson put the side two goals ahead after 25 minutes, but a first-half stoppage-time goal from Nelson Weiper gave the Germans hope of mounting a comeback.

Paul Nebel found the equaliser on the hour mark, but Marseille winger Jonathan Rowe scored what was ultimately the winning goal shortly after the extra period began. The U21s last won back-to-back Euros 41 years ago.

The past decade has been something of a golden era for the country’s youth teams, who have won nine trophies in 11 years between them (if you count the Toulon Tournament). It demonstrates just how well the FA and all of the academies across the nation are bringing through young talent, many of whom go on to enjoy successful careers, whether they be in the Premier League or abroad.

This latest success takes the total number of tournaments won by England men’s teams at all groups to 27. The only one claimed by the senior team is, of course, the 1966 World Cup.
