It has been good to see the regular season in the MLS so far. It is about to end, but there is a lot left still to unpack.

There is also the awards side of things that people are going to be talking about for the next few weeks.

The award for the MVP, named the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award has not been announced yet, but the league will announce the finalists for the award in due course, and one name will be a popular figure.

I mean, let's not kid ourselves. Is there even a debate about who is going to win the Landon Donovan MLS MVP?

Lionel Messi will probably win the MLS MVP award - and shock no one

Even if you have not watched a single minute of MLS this season, you would probably be able to concoct an accurate estimate on who should or shouldn't win.

in the former category, one name will be pretty common if you do a survey. Lionel Messi is the clear favorite to win the award again, and it would not be a shock to the system if he did win it.

Rather, it would be something most MLS fans would have expected, after 24 goals and 11 assists in just 25 appearances. It would be rude and unfair to not give the award to Messi after the numbers he has and the things he has achieved on the football pitch, right in front of our eyes.

The only thing you could say about Messi is that his team are not exactly top of the table.

In fact, they are four points behind Philadelphia Union, but let's be honest: is there any other player who deserves this award more than arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport?

I mean, goals aside, the chances he has created for his teammates on a consistent basis just cannot be ignored.

Even if you forget about the 11 assists that Messi has this season, he would have had quite a few more if his teammates were just that little bit clinical in front of goal.

He has done a lot of good things this season, and has achieved enough to be the unanimous MVP for this season.

Denis Bouanga is not that far behind in terms of goals with 23, but Messi has never been the player to only be judged by goals and assists in his career. He is far and away the best player in the MLS, and he should win the award.

Anders Dreyer actually has a case to make it a close contest with his brilliant statistics for an expansion team - and maybe, it should go to him for completely different reasons - but if we are talking about the best player in the league, look no further than the Argentine.
