QPR have confirmed the signing of Tariq Lamptey

QPR will be aiming to improve on their 15th place finish in the Championship next season.

The Hoops came 15th for the second consecutive campaign in what was Julien Stéphan’s first year in charge.

The Frenchman did improve the team’s overall points tally compared to 2024/25, but his sights will now be set on cracking into the top half of the standings.

The London outfit have added some fresh faces to the first team squad already, with the new season not getting underway for another few weeks.

Calum Ward and Boy Kemper arrived from Motherwell and NAC Breda, respectively, while Pierce Charles joined on loan from Manchester City.

And Tariq Lamptey has become the latest addition, signing as a free agent following his exit from Fiorentina.

QPR have confirmed the addition of Lamptey on a permanent basis after his contract with Fiorentina was terminated by mutual consent.

The full-back has issued a message to supporters on Instagram following the announcement of his move, claiming he is excited for this next chapter in his career.

“Let’s get to work, excited for this next chapter,” wrote Lamptey.

And his former Fiorentina teammate David de Gea has responded, posting a love eyes emoji at Lamptey’s move to QPR.

The 25-year-old made just two appearances in Serie A last season, with an anterior cruciate ligament injury keeping him on the sidelines since September.

The defender is still not back to full fitness, but the Hoops will be hoping he can recover quickly and get back up to speed by September.

Lamptey previously played for Brighton, where he made 103 appearances in the Premier League.

QPR fans are very positive about the addition of Lamptey, although some are wary of his recent injury record being a concern.

Comparisons have been made to the signing of Harvey Vale, who also has a history with Chelsea like the full-back.

Some supporters have suggested that this could be one of the club’s best signings in recent years, putting faith in the Hoops that the player’s medical must not have shown too much to be worried about.

And fans have also credited Stéphan for his role in getting the deal over the line, suggesting this is why his contract extension earlier this month was a smart move.

QPR will return to league action on 15 August with a clash against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Of course, Lamptey’s fitness is a concern given he hasn’t played since September, and he’s had issues with staying available even before then.

However, if he can be consistently in the side for Stéphan next season then he could prove an excellent addition.

The 25-year-old has over 100 appearances in the Premier League under his belt, and that kind of experience will prove valuable in the Championship.

But he’s also proven himself as a strong attacking threat at right-back, or right-wing-back, making him a potentially exciting asset to have in the squad.
