Daily Record reports that Jack Ross has been shortlisted for the Scottish FA chief football officer role.
The 49-year-old is regarded as a leading candidate to replace Andy Gould, who left for a role at FIFA. Ross currently works as Newcastle United’s head of football strategy, and it is unclear if he would leave St James’ Park.
Ross managed Sunderland from May 2018 to October 2019 after back-to-back drops to League One. His first season ended in fifth and a 2-1 play-off final defeat to Charlton Athletic, while the EFL Trophy was lost to Portsmouth on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley.
He was dismissed early in 2019/20 with the club sixth in League One. They later slipped to eighth, before winning promotion the following year.
Since leaving, he has managed Hibernian and Dundee United, reaching a Scottish Cup final with the former.
Meanwhile, former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will retire at the end of the season. He made 101 appearances for the Black Cats from 2010 to 2013, keeping 33 clean sheets before joining Liverpool.
Mignolet played 204 times for Liverpool, winning the Champions League and finishing runner-up in the same competition, the EFL Cup and the Europa League. Now 38, he has spent seven years with Club Brugge, winning four league titles and three domestic cups, and will hope to help them chase a 20th crown, with 10 Championship Play-off games to come.
