Ex-Valencia youngster Martín Tejón is thriving at Marítimo, leading a promotion push in Portugal’s second tier after leaving Paterna last season. According to Superdeporte, the academy graduate, who made his Valencia first-team debut, has seized a starring role in Funchal, Madeira, where Cristiano Ronaldo was born and raised.
He chose a strong project with top-flight ambitions to play an important part and accelerate his development. Operating with freedom between the lines, his movement and end product have made him a decisive weapon.
Tejón has five goals and six assists, 11 goal contributions that have underpinned Marítimo’s status as clear leaders and prime candidates for promotion. His form has seen him start every match.
In Portugal he has been recognised as the division’s breakout player, and has been named the league’s best young player for a second month. A stunning direct free-kick that flew into the top corner also drew acclaim.
A step up to the elite looks almost certain, with several clubs tracking him. Valencia retain 40 per cent of any future sale, a figure that could drop if Marítimo pay a bonus, and they hold matching rights to equal any offer Marítimo intend to accept.
The run-in promises plenty for Tejón, who is enjoying and surpassing expectations in his first spell away from Paterna. He is showing that the talent long evident at Valencia is flourishing in the professional game.
