Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman spoke exclusively to Football League World about the impact that Chuba Akpom could make at Portman Road
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has backed Chuba Akpom for plenty of goals for Ipswich Town, whilst also saying that he believes that Town's squad is better this year than when they won promotion to the Premier League.
Kieran McKenna's side perhaps surprisingly made a real impact upon their return to the second tier after a spell in League One during the 2023/24 season, and sensationally won promotion at the first time of asking.
This year, however, following a valiant Premier League campaign that did still see them relegated with a couple of games still left to play, they are among the favourites to win promotion back to the top division.
That is partly due to a really impressive summer transfer window, which has seen them bring in midfielders Jens Cajuste and Azor Matusiwa, whilst the much coveted Akpom looks set to be the next man to follow them two through the door.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman stated how impressed he was with the signing.
Goodman told us: "Let's assume that Chuba Akpom will sign for Ipswich, because I haven't heard that it's been totally confirmed as of yet.
"But if he does, he's joining pretty much the strongest squad in all positions in the Championship, and a team that likes to get on the front foot.
"Last time in the Championship, they scored 92 goals and I think this squad is probably better than the last time they were in the Championship.
"So I would expect Ipswich to be among the league's top scorers as they've got a plethora of options. I think Akpom did really well at Ajax, and he's gone a little bit under the radar but has continued to score goals - and I have no doubt that he'll get plenty if that move goes through."
As Goodman said there, Ipswich are certainly no strangers to scoring goals and, despite losing Liam Delap to Chelsea this summer, they look as if they will have a relatively formidable forward line going into the Championship season.
George Hirst has had a strong pre-season but looks like he will have to act as Akpom's deputy, with both Conor Chaplin and Ali Al-Hamadi still at the club. Despite their relegation, Town still boast a huge number of talents, with the likes of Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene both having shone at this level before for Sunderland and Hull City respectively.
Whilst Sammie Szmodics had an disrupted first Premier League campaign, he is sure to be a huge threat in the second tier, having scored 27 goals in 44 games at this level two seasons ago. And, of course, not forgetting Omari Hutchinson, who was arguably Town's best player last season. He has seen bids for him by Brentford and Nottingham Forest rejected.
As for Akpom though, he comes in with serious Championship pedigree - having scored 28 Championship goals with Middlesbrough three seasons ago, thus earning his move to the Dutch capital. He scored 23 goals in 68 games for Ajax, with a loan spell at Lille seeing him score three in 16 as he fell out of favour under Francesco Farioli at the back end of last season, with new manager John Heitinga now deeming him surplus to requirements at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
