Exclusive: Former Man United Star Names Which Players Could Leave This Summer and Shares his Thoughts on Ruben Amorim

The 2024-25 season has been nothing short of catastrophic for Manchester United, currently sitting down in 14th place in the Premier League table. Only five teams have scored fewer goals than the Red Devils in the league so far this season, with Ruben Amorim’s side only managing 38 goals in 33 games so far.

However, despite their struggles domestically, there is still hope for a happy ending to Amorim’s first season in charge. After a spectacular comeback against Lyon, Man United find themselves in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Bilbao over two legs.

A victory there could see them face off against Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side in the final, who face Bodo/Glimt in the final four.

Any success on the European front, as much as it would be a huge boost, wouldn’t paper over the cracks that have been glaringly obvious in Amorim’s squad across the season.

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on Amorim’s current squad and recent performances…

Keeping the Faith in Amorim

When asked about his faith in Amorim to lead United forward, Brown wasn’t hesitant to defend the Portuguese head coach, saying: “I really like him. I’m not going to bring up injuries and all of that, but it’s clear that he needs some of his own players and I think he will do well.”

“We’ve been below par this season and that’s not good enough and when you’re at Man United, you have to be ready to take some stick.”

“He will have a long think this summer about what he can do to make things better and players will have to leave. That happens at every club, but there’s a lot that needs to be done at United this summer.”

It’s going to be a huge summer for Man United. Too many transfer windows have brought poor and expensive signings, which needs to be corrected under INEOS. Wolves’ Matheus Cunha seems very likely to join this summer, with United ready to trigger his £62.5m release clause.

But for players to arrive, players must leave the club first…

Who Leaves Man United This Summer?

There’s an easy place to start with Old Trafford departures this summer, with Brown ‘expecting’ all four players with expiring contracts to leave on a free. Veterans Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans are both expected to retire, whilst Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen will look for new clubs when their contracts expire in June.

Brown was also point out the precarious situation of Marcus Rashford, who is currently out on loan at Aston Vila, saying: “It will be interesting to see what happens with Rashford when he comes back from his loan because he’s really impressed me.”

However, United’s previous record of handing out lucrative and lengthy contracts could come back to haunt them, as Brown pointed out: “It’s so complicated though because players don’t just leave. For example, you can’t just make Casemiro leave because he is still under contract and the player has all of the power in that situation.”

“It all has to be done the right way, that’s the most important thing.”
