Ben Jacobs’ exclusive for TalkSport about Enzo Fernandez makes a very interesting point about why Chelsea want his future wrapped up quickly.

They’ve set a big asking price and want suitors or either meet it or move on. Jacobs says “it’s understood Chelsea want Fernandez’s future resolved quickly in order to provide stability for new head coach Xabi Alonso.”

They consider Enzo Maresca’s mid-season departure this year as a key reason for the disaster of a season, and want to make the best possible environment for Alonso. For starters, that means knowing if such a key player is going to be at the club so planning can start around what the team will look like.

Enzo is still just 25, and his peak could well be ahead of him. But so far he’s been a bit of a pain for Chelsea, both on and off the field. His tactical fit hasn’t quite worked under a number of managers, and seems to struggle to mesh with Cole Palmer.

At the right price, there certainly is a strong argument for cashing in and using the money on a top replacement who fits Alonso’s ideas better.

Enzo’s asking price is set at £120m according to the same report – and all of this will come down to whether Real Madrid or any other team are willing to pay something close to that.

Levi Colwill’s return from injury was really impressive – he came back as though he had never been away. People at Chelsea were apparently thinking the same thing.
