Exeter City hosted Wycombe Wanderers in their first game without Gary Caldwell.

Exeter City snatched a point right at the death thanks to a Jayden Wareham equaliser versus Wycombe Wanderers, which cancelled out Fred Onyedinma's opener.

Michael Duff's side capitalised on a strong start when Ewan Henderson's long-range pass was misjudged by Joe Whitworth and Pierce Sweeney, allowing Onyedinma to tap into an empty net.

The Grecians responded well to the setback and finished the first half strongly, with chances for Jayden Wareham and Sweeney being gathered by Will Norris, but they ultimately couldn't break Wycombe's resolve before the break.

After a second half dominated by the hosts, they levelled the game right at the death when Wareham flicked home Timur Tutierov's cross, earning his side a vital point.

Exeter City 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

The first chance of the match went Exeter's way, after a cheap giveaway in his own half by Dan Casey. The ball found its way out wide to Niskanen and his cross was headed over by Brierley from close range.

A couple of minutes later, Wareham was given his first sniff of the encounter. A clearance from Whitworth was knocked down perfectly by Magennis for his strike partner, who saw Norris off his line. The effort had the Wycombe keeper scrambling, but it sailed just over the bar.

With just over 20 minutes on the clock, the visitors took the lead. A wonderful over the top ball from Henderson caught Sweeney and Whitworth off guard, and Onyedinma was on hand to steer home the loose ball.

Henderson was then involved in the next chance for his side, as he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and drove a looping effort just over Whitworth's bar, which had the Exeter keeper concerned.

On the stroke of half-time, Wareham nearly found the equaliser for his side. A strong spell from the hosts saw a deep ball reach him at the far post, which ricocheted kindly off Cauley Woodrow and the number nine, landing fortunately at the feet of Norris.

After three minutes of added time, referee Gavin Ward called time for the first half. Wycombe had the lead and looked fairly comfortable, but Exeter had finished the half strongly, leaving the contest wide open.

After a strong start to the second half from Wycombe, Exeter went through the gears with their strike duo Magennis and Wareham. The former knocked down a Whitworth long ball for the latter, whose shot was charged down in the nick of time by Dan Casey.

Wanderers did look somewhat shaky when their opponents went forward at times. Wareham forced a save from Norris with a venomous effort after Aaron Morley gave away possession inside his own half.

Norris himself then gifted possession to Sweeney, who was urged to take a crack at goal from distance. The skipper obliged, but the recovering goalkeeper managed to get to ground and clasp the effort.

Niskanen then got the better of Dan Harvie from an excellently weighted pass, cutting inside before drilling his curled effort high and wide of Norris' goal.

It was all Exeter in the final 10 minutes of the contest, with another ball to the back stick causing issues. This time, it was ex-Wycombe employee Luca Woodhouse striking the outside of the post with a header.

You felt that a moment of Exeter magic was coming, and it did. A ball into the box from substitute Tutierov was perfectly on the head of Wareham, who got the neatest of flicks to steer the ball past Norris.

It was late heartbreak for Wycombe, who'd defended the lead so well, but the decision to bring off an attacker for another defender didn't pay off, and ultimately cost his side three points.
